Cute story of a young girl's experiences when she moves from China to Brooklyn in 1947, with adorable illustrations by Marc Simont.

I love the bit when Shirley is figuring out her age - it's the same reason why my grandmother always had trouble: she used to say "I was one year old when I was born, then at New Year's I turned two..." - her birthday was on Christmas Day, so by that method of counting, a week after she was born, she was two years old. Since she didn't have a birth certificate, trying to figure out what year she was born was really hard. "No, wait, Grandma, are you 75 or 73?"

Also, I found it interesting that the Chinese image in the moon is "the Hare that stands under the cassia tree pounding the elixir of life in a jade mortar." I learned that it was a rabbit pounding mochi in a stone mortar - a different tradition, but not all that different.
