I should have known as soon as I saw the words "A Comic Novel" that I wasn't going to enjoy this one. It's like when an author puts "A Novel" at the end of a title, you know it's going to be trying incredibly hard to be literary, but probably not succeeding. If they have to tell you it's "A Comic Novel", then they're going to be trying incredibly hard to be funny, but probably not succeeding.
Plus the characters just annoyed me. I just wanted to yell at Effie to get a grip, get her essay written and dump her loser boyfriend. And as for her oh-so-mysterious "mother" dropping hints but refusing to tell her anything - I suppose that was supposed to build suspense, but all it did was annoy me (and I guessed most of it long before she revealed it anyway).
Possibly some of it could have been good (and maybe even funny), if the characters had been more likeable, or the humour less forced. Oh well.

Caught at the Cafe Bleu. Love the title. Initially thought someone at the Bog would like it, but she already has a copy. She took another book, which I didn't have time to note the BCID so won't be journalling any time soon, sorry.
What a strange story. It was worth persisting to the end.
