Please do not judge me as a "book snob", but in the terms I measure books I'd rate this as a "tabloid", but on a par with the Express maybe (whereas say Jackie Collins would be a Sun and Harold Robbins maybe a Mirror!)... Interesting issues and I can see why she as an author may be popular with Book Groups (though I find the "Reading Group Guide" and inclusion of first chapter of "Vanishing Acts" at end of this book intensely annoying).
However it is a sort of compelling light read. I could never engage particularly with any of the characters though - they all seemes exactly like book characters and very American ones at that, but without the lovely details one gets in, say, an Updike book. I do not mean to detract from her skills, but for me they are of a certain "type", a very Ameican type and not one that appeals to me at all. I have been tols that other of her works are better, but I shall not be sampling myself (EG "My Sisters Keeper").
I read this for a reading group, although I set it to available now I'll not pass it on or wild release until they have met on the 13th June, then I have no desire to keep it!
