I did manage to get all the way through, but I can't say it was my kind of thing either: apparently Philippa Gregory thinks that Elizabeth I was - and I see no evidence to suggest this isn't just how she thinks all women are - a pathetic, shallow incompetent thoroughly incapable of doing anything unless a man tells her to, and as such little more than a tool for the men around her.

Of course, I'm no historian. Maybe Gregory's right. But it generally wasn't a particularly fun read.
