Fliss Elmsworth is beginning to admit to herself that her marriage is crumbling when her hsband Bryn gets a contract as a geophysicist on an archaeological dig in the Peak District.
Her first reaction is one of relief that he has gone away for a few weeks, but the visit by two 'heavies' who threaten her two year old daughter because they claim Bryn owes them money, prompts her to follow him North.
Bryn refuses to take her fears seriously, so Fliss, afraid to go home alone, decides to stay on at the dig and, if necessary, take part.
It is not long before the first finds are uncovered, but unfortunately they prove to be bones that have lain in the ground no longer than seven years. The coroner is quickly informed and the police become involved."
