this is for my Cameroon selection in olympic challenge. I enjoyed the book and can see why it is considered a modern classic. I especially loved how the whites dress for every occasion.

This book told a story of an African young man, who was a houseboy of a white priest in Cameroon, watching the life of the white people and serving his master and his family. The book was well written and I read it fast, and it was nice company for a rainy afternoon. However, I found this book a little bit sad, how the whites were in Africa mastering everything and -body, but still, being so foolish and narrow minded. But it was an interesting story, and it was nice to read it from a view of an African houseboy.

I read this book also as a part of my Book from every country in the world-challenge (Cameroon). Thank you once again hendertuckian for sharing it!

Cameroon from above

I'll let this book continue its journey soon as a bookray.

Thank you once again, katyan. I've read very little African litterature and surely no books from Cameroon. Many thanks for offering this book on Finnish forum.

The story of the boy who leaves his home after a disagreement with his father and goes to live with Europeans as a servant, a houseboy. He becomes a scapegoat when the mistress of his house cheated on his husband. All whites turn against him. I liked the structure of the book. There was a narrator in the first chapter of the book. He gives the diary of the houseboy to reader and makes it feel very real. The diary sucks you in.

The cover promised the book to be "very funny and inexpressibly sad". I couldn't find anything funny in it, to me the story was just sad. I liked this book a lot. Thanks for offering it as a bookray, katyan.

What a very sad story indeed, although I had to laugh out loud about the contraceptive-story. Just great.
It was an interestimg view on 'the dark side' the colonial history of Cameroon. Thanks for sharing this book with us. It has so far been the book I liked best from those I read for 'Africa'.

'Houseboy' will make it's way across the Atlantic to shpriz1 on Monday...

According to the cover, this book was supposed to be "very funny". I didn't get the funny part. It was entertaining (at times), but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was "very funny". Nevertheless, I really liked the story. I liked that the story was told from the houseboy's point of view and it gave me a different perspective.
Looks like I am the last one on this bookray. I don't know yet what my plans for this book are :)
