The story of an incredibly disfunctional family. The author, of course, depicts herself to be the only one of the family who is a thoroughly nice person, but given how warped everyone else is, you sort of suspect she's probably done her share of back-stabbing and nastiness too. Some fascinating insights, though, into how the Asian concept of absolute filial respect and obedience can backfire and end up trapping people in damaging patterns of behaviour with no way out.

Caught at my second BC meetup. I normally avoid non-fiction, but this looks fascinating (if grim).
I enjoyed this book, although it wasn't quite what I expected. I had not realised that this story would be an illustration of how wealth is no protector from a family's neglect and abuse. Like FutureCat, I wondered what story the other members of the family would tell. I wonder if the author is glad to have aired the family's dirty laundry?

I really enjoyed this book, it brought back memories of Wild Swans although I would say this book is not quite in the same league. What a thoroughly horrible family, I'm afraid that I have to agree with FutureCat that Adeline, perhaps, depicts herself as being TOO nice and I do wonder if we got the full story. I imagine it was a cathartic experience for the author to get everything off her chest. Thanks again to TheLetterB for sending it all the way to Scotland from New Zealand. I plan to send this as a RABCK to a bookcrosser I know enjoys books set in the Far East but probably won't be until after the holidays.

Thank you marie-therese! The title is familiar but on a quick perusal I'm pretty certain I haven't read it.
I really enjoyed this, the way Niang manipulated her stepchildren was truly awful. I think the person whose point of view I'd most like to learn is Lydia's, she came across as such a bitter & twisted person in Adeline's view.
Thank you marie-therese for sending the book to me.

'Caught' on the book buffet at the London Convention at Imperial College.
I read this a few weeks ago and loved it so much that I am having difficulty in bringing myself to part with it, but finding this copy at the convention has resolved my dilemma - I can now post this one on to my sister. Thank you.
Update, 26th April. Doh! My sister has already found a copy in a local charity shop, so I'll pass this one on at a London meet up sometime.
