From the first page of this book, I swore I was reading a Dickens novel. This is actually a mystery novel in a lot of ways, set in the Victorian period in England. Once you get into the book, you feel sorry for the hero, think the heroine a "helpless female who should have known better" type and well, you know, the typical Victorian stuff.
It is actually a stupendous novel and I highly recommend it. If you like Dickens, Wilkie Collins or Sheridan LeFanu, you will love this book...it's all three rolled into one.
I now have a duplicate, so this one is available.
