This is a book that I had as a child. I still have it on a bookshelf downstairs-- this is a second copy purchased at a thrift store to be bookcrossed. I remember reading this when I was little, and I think I liked it, but I don't remember the entire story exactly. I probably did like it though, as it's based on a true story and I always liked true stories. I was also (with my suspected tiny bit of Iroquois blood) interested in at least the majority of things Native, so I'm sure this book would have been right up my eight/nine-year-old alley. Perhaps I'll give it a re-read before sending it out into the world, refresh my memory a little :)
This was a quick read once I got around to it. It all came back to me as I read. I even remembered thinking some of the same things twelve years ago that I thought this time around.
This book is, to me, much like a few other books I like-- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Merchant of Venice, To Kill a Mockingbird... it's one of those books that's almost hard to read at times because of the awful things said/thought by certain characters about certain others... but if you look through all that to see the point of the book (and the objectionable stuff is generally necessary to illustrate the point), it's got something wonderful to say. This book is also quite well-researched, from what I understand, which is nice because those of us who are not overly familiar with the Iroquois (particularly Seneca) culture and lifestyle of 250 years ago can actually learn something from it too (besides the obvious lessons put forth)! Another thing that I think added to this book for me is that, while it's set in places I have never been, it's set among the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy (Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Mohawk). This is interesting because I've grown up quite near the Six Nations Reserve (Tuscarora's #6). I don't know what to do with this just yet, but I hope whoever has it next enjoys it and appreciates what it has to say.
