WWII intrique in Eastern Europe, comes this close to ending the war before it began. If only.

Picked up at tonight's meeting.

Take characters reminiscent of Tender is the Night and plop them into the early days before WWII. The vignets of the high life in Europe (mostly Paris but other places as well) is played against the main character's side-line career in espionage for his uncle. Can he stop the war and keep his mistress?

A good, atmospheric read set in Paris and eastern Europe between the 2 wars.
I appreciated the intelligent, spare wrting style; the blend of history and fiction; civilized living, romance, risks, in ominous times.

(Makes me aware of our ignorance of history and geography - and how sheltered we've been from wartime decisions, survival, uprootings).
