September 1997. Tony Hawks and Arthur Smith are watching the football round at Tony's house. England are playing Moldova in the World Cup qualifiers and winning easily. The conversation, oddly, turns to tennis, and a pedantic argument ensues. Tony believing that even a "natural sportsman or sportswoman" couldn't be good at tennis without the proper tuition. Arthur vowing that most natural sportsmen (like the footballers on the telly) could pick up a racket and, without too much bother, play a good game, in fact, they could beat Tony (ex-Sussex junior champion, former Equity Knockout winner). And so a childish bet, of 100 pounds, was profferd that Tony couldn't play all of the Moldovan national football team at tennis and beat them all. Tony says that he could. Not every single one of them, taunted his friend conspiratorially, one of them is bound to be very good. Arthur dangles another carrot, the first being the original 100 pound bet, for Tony - Arthur say's he'll stand naked in Balham High Street and sing the Moldovan National Anthem, with a pixie hat on, if Tony beats the whole team at tennis. So Tony sets out to track down the Moldovan football team playing that day and beat them all at tennis.
Have been looking forward to reading this for ages - thank you Netstation!
I loved it! Quite mad and fun at the same time. Tony's experiences in Modoldova reminded me so much of my trip to the Ukraine a few years ago - which of course enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
I will now send this book out as an RABCK to further it's journeys.
