I actually could never get through this book as a kid. As I really enjoyed the movie version of The Fellowship of the Ring, I intend to reread them all after seeing the third movie next winter. (3 reasons for waiting - there is some blur b/t the end of the first movie and beginning of the 2nd book, certain bits that appear in the books as flashbacks come out in order in the movie, and once I start the trilogy, I may not be able to stop until done. I had such a different experience than my friends who KNEW what was going to happen watching the movie, it was actually pretty cool....)
