"In writing The Story of San Michele Axel Munthe captured, almost unwittingly, the spirit and feel of an age.
Axel Munthe was born in 1857 in Sweden. He became a doctor in Paris at a precociously early age and his extraodinary rapport with both humans and animals soon established his international reputation.
Munthe devoted himself to rebuilding the Tiberian villa of San Michele that stood in ruins on the island of Capri. During typhus cholera and earthquake disasters in Southern Italy he worked unstintingly for the poor people he loved best."
