I loved this book - Tony Hawks tells of his real life travel around Ireland taking with him a bar fridge. This was the result of a bet made with a friend. "I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of one hundred pounds that he cannot hitch hike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month."

Book tells of his homourous adventures while hitching around the Emerald Isle, fridge in tow, the characters he meets, challenges and friendships along the way.

I grabbed this book out of the Quick Turnaround Bookbag. It looks really interesting and I can't wait to get to read it. It sounds really interesting. You've got to wonder if it would be published if it was anyone other than Tony Hawks who wrote it though...

I really enjoyed this book. It was a barrel of laughs. I thought I had journalled it when I finished it but clearly not...

I took this book with me on my Year 11 excursion to Sydney, and ended up staying up all of one night reading it. I had to drag myself through the powerhouse museum the next day let me tell you, but at least I got a bit of a rest sitting in the Imax theatre.

Like I said, I really enjoyed this book, and I posted it off to someone who is goint to see Tony Hawks live and wanted to read some of his books first...

I wonder if he'll take his fridge!

It arrived this morning! Thank you! This will be a high priority read, as I want to read it before I see the author next month, as part of the Perth International Arts Festival. :D

Really enjoyed this one. :) Very funny and now makes me want to visit Ireland...without a fridge though! His public exposure via a popular radio show certainly held him along. I bet he would have had a much harder time of it without that helping hand.

I am going to lend this book to a friend who is going to see Tony Hawks live with me next month. :)

wow..what a saga! I lent this book to my best friend. She read it, loved it and then lent it ot her mum to read. Her mum went to a book signing with the author and got him to sign the book...no big deal..except it was specifically signed tt my friend. D'oh! Her mum didn't understand the concept of BC.

Finally, I found a 2nd hand copy of the book at a charity booksale today and will put this BCID # on the new copy and keep it moving.
Phew!

This is a rather sweet book, and a fun little read. Tony Hawks, musician and comedian, hitches around Ireland with a (smallish) fridge to win a 100 pound bet. It wasn't really Tony that made the book for me (he's a bit of a dick at times), but rather the people that helped him out - gave him lifts, free accommodation and other treats. Despite being inanimate, the fridge itself gains a character and also gains a name, gets baptised and goes surfing. Despite Hawk's attempts to read more meaning into his trip than is really necessary (he talks about his new 'fridge philosophy' and likens his final trip back to Dublin to the second coming), I think he has a point when he talks about not stressing and letting things take care of themselves. Trust in the Fridge!

Synopsis:

'I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of One Hundred Pounds that he cannot hitch hike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month'

A foolhardy attempt to win a drunken bet led to Tony Hawks having one of the best experiences of his life. Joined by his trusty travelling companion-cum-domestic appliance he found himself in the midst of a remarkable, inspirational and at times, down right silly adventure.

In their month of madness Tony and his fridge surfed together, entered a batchelor festival, and one of them had sex without the other knowing. The fridge got christened and they even met the poorest King on Earth.

As they travelled through Donegal, Sligo, Galway, Clare and beyond, the fridge became a momentary focus for the people of Ireland, growing into a personality in its own right, and bringing people together wherever it went.

Against all odds, Round Ireland With a Fridge is one of the most inspirational stories you will ever read. Join the fearless pair as they battle on towards Dublin and a breathtaking finale that is both moving, uplifting, and a fitting conclusion to the whole ridiculous affair.

Comments:

This was an absolutely hilarious look at what it is like to hitch hike around Ireland with a fridge in tow. Quirky, yet profound, most of life's lessons can be learned from the tale of Tony's journey and his interactions with the many interesting (and sometimes odd) people he meets along the way. Reading this book lifted my spirits and left me with a distinct desire to visit Ireland. Definitely worth reading!
