Yet Another Victim of Ave. Victor Hugo's closing... I haven't read this yet, but I did read the first chapter. Looks like more of the "ordinary person from real world gets transported into fantasy world" thing, but I understand things get a lot more complicated & this is supposed to be a classic of fantasy. I'll write more when it's read.
Okay, it's read now. I kept thinking of Lord of the Rings, Fionavar, and Covenant--by the publication date it's possible the latter two were influenced by this book. There were some powerful visuals, but for me, the whole thing failed to hang together. It either wanted to be much bigger (like the other series I mentioned) or more focused. The language was a bit forced in places as well. An OK read.
