From the back cover:

Nobody could capture the Phantom. She was the wildest mare on Assateague Island. They said she was like the wind, that the white "map" on her shoulders was her mark of freedom.

Paul and Maureen Beebe had their hearts set on owning her. They were itching to buy and tame her, and worked hard to earn the money she would cost. But the roundup men had tried to capture her and for two years she had escaped them....

Pony Penning Day holds a surprise for everyone, for Paul not only brings in the Phantom, but her newborn colt as well. Can Paul and Maureen possibly earn enough to buy them both?

This book is a 1948 Newbery Honor book.

I bought this book to release in memory of my dad. He died on April 17, 2005, and I decided that every year I am going to read & release a book in his memory sometime around the anniversary of his death. He really liked horses, so I thought it would be fitting to read & release horse books. I read King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, so I decided to read another one of her books this year.

I thought this was an entertaining story. I think Grandpa was my favorite character. Also, knowing that the events in this story really happened makes it even more interesting.
