This is my 71st registration for the BC Race to 3 Million challenge.

From the cover -
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon - when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach - an "outlander" - in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord... 1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny is soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidding Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life... and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire... and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Sadly, MaryZee passed suddenly in September 2012. MaryZee's daughter is now ready to rehome her mom's books and I was willing to collect and redistribute them to keep her literary legacy alive.

From the library of the late MaryZee, a dear friend. 6of8 was kind enough to collect them all and distribute them among BCinDC members. This is one of those books. MaryZee was an avid BookCrosser, so I will be releasing this in her honor.

I read another copy of this some years ago and this is what I had to say then:

Claire is vacationing in Scotland with her husband Frank in 1945 when suddenly she is transported 200 years into the past. This is more historical romance than science fiction, and a lot of it is quite unsettling: graphic violence, corporal punishment of children and spouses alike, and lots and lots of sex, much of it very rough. The homosexual characters are all pedophiles, sadists, and/or rapists. I did, however, really enjoy the glimpse of ordinary life in the 1740s, the witch trials, and the comparison of medical practices between the 18th and 20th centuries. I may actually give the second book in the series a try, as the ending of this one implies it may have more to do with actual time travel, changing history, and the like. This book is mostly about Claire's relationship with Jamie, an intriguing Scotsman whose fate seems intertwined with her own. Which is fine, as far as that goes, but don't come into this expecting a science fiction tale. That said, if you're a sucker for 18th century Highlands romance, this is not to be missed.

I was so excited to find this book! It was in a Little Free Library at the Lincoln Square Mall (half-abandoned) in Urbana. This copy is from 1992, with a lavish gilded fantasy-art cover and raised lettering -- a much more pulpy and romantic design than the more austere blue cover published now. It's so touching to learn about the original owner from 14 years ago, maryzee, and the efforts of her friends to continue her Bookcrossing legacy. I bet she would have loved the TV show that would later be made from this series. I hadn't heard of this website before but now I think it's a wonderful thing!
