I got this back and gave it to another person to read, and it has returned to me again (like a boomerang!)
It was dark and somewhat macabre. I didn't mind the gross-factor in it, and it is interesting to see how patriarchal Japanese society is as well as the four interesting and vastly different main female characters Kirino draws.
However, the last section--perhaps the final 20 pages of the novel, disgusted me (I don't react well to rape scenes, especially when the woman isn't completely outraged and horrified. The last reader who I loaned the book to felt that the final 20 pages was keeping with the main character's attitude--a loaner who found someone else who was completely twisted, lonely, and a wreck. While I can see her point, I was still disgusted by the character's reaction to what happened.
Still, a very good book. I'm glad I read it.
