The Devil in the White City
2 journalers for this copy...

Expertly written and intigueing. I could not put this historic account of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, in Chicago, down for one minute. Extraordinary and compelling, detailed yet easily read. Unbelievable and appalling. You must read it! Loved it.

I don't know as much about this period in history as I would like- this author has piqued my interest and I will certainly explore the era more. So many things went through my head while reading- the recent BTK capture and trial, the bullying and cowardice of union leaders, the gullibility of the young, the sheer determination of Americans to complete the 'impossible', the ability of a committee to completely derail progress... so much more, but you'll have to read it yourself.
It is fascinating and repulsive at the same time. I read it in one day because I couldn't go to sleep without knowing the outcome. Then I was worried I might not be able to sleep because the outcome was so creepy!
I caught the book at work yesterday and I plan to make it available there again today.
It is a worthy read- but not for the squeamish.
