It's hard to know how to categorise Jasper Fforde's books - after some consideration I've decided on Sc-Fi and Fantasy...rather than in the mystery section which is where I found them in Blackwell's!

(note: this copy has a different cover to that shown)

This is a brilliant book - incredibly well written & a must for anyone who enjoys reading literature, the reader is expected to actually participate in these books! So many jokes - I have to read this again since I'm so sure I missed most of them on first reading!

The first book of the Thursday Next series.
Thursday Next is the heroine....she's a Literary Detective on a parallel universe where the Crimean War is still being fought! It's set in an alternative Swindon...and Thursday has a pet Dodo...check out the website! Oh - and Thursday jumps in and out of books...yes, really! ;)

This sums the books up well:

It's here! It's here! Well actually I expect it was here a couple of days ago, but I've only just found it in the post pile :o(

Thanks, Molyneux. I'll start on it as soon as I finish my current book and I'll let you know how I get on.

So Molyneux the book-pusher and Jasper Fforde lover gets another convert to the cause! I loved this book: it's clever and witty and in some cases laugh out loud funny. The names of the characters always provoke a wry smile, I particularly liked Oswald Mandias ;o)

I think I'll find some copies of this to send to my friends in the US. Whether the geography jokes will survive crossing the Atlantic will be interesting to see, but the literary ones will appeal to any english speaking reader.

Thanks, Molyneux. I think I only resisted reading this for so long out of envy. I know that Jasper Fforde is clever and rich, and everytime you mentioned how gorgeous he was I thought simply "Not fair!" ;o)

I took this as one of my vacation reads. I've not read Jane Eyre, but this has made me want to do so. As chance would have it, a new dramatisation of it is due to be shown on Telly, which will help keep mnt TBR a little lower.

This is a wonderfully ingenious book. It is full of wry and dry humour, and was a joy to read. Interestingly for a male author, the main character is female. I suspect that there is a very clever reason for this - probably to draw parallels with Jane Eyre, but I can't be sure!

This book defies categorisation, which is why I will try :) It is like "Quantum Leap" meets "League of Gentlemen". Or "Alice in Wonderland" meets the "Terminator". Who would have thought you could turn the book Jane Eyre into an action thriller?

A highly recommended read. I shall pass this on to my daughter who will love it!

My Dad gave me this a few days ago and I am enjoying it a lot so far! I'll make a proper opinion when I finish the book.

I have now finished the book and absolutely loved it. To be utterly cliché, 'I couldn't put it down'. I recommend it to anybody who has a good sense of humour and enjoys a silly yet terribly exciting and interesting read.

I loved the gadgets in it, the characters, and also the sometimes obscure name puns.

I've given it to my Nan to read. She hasn't got internet access but has promised me that she will release it at Centre Parcs in a few months time.
