While I was reading this, I realized that one of the reasons I was drawn to Jodi Picoult's books was that I identified with some of her female protagonists - the ones that felt they weren't good enough for the men they were with. There were a few things in this book that were uncomfortably close to home at the time I read it, but it was worth reading even with that. This story seems to be a transition to the style fo books she's writing now.
