The story of the Wicked Witch of the West. Very moralistic, canon-changing, and very well written. I don't think I'd have read it, had the writing not lured me in.
That being said, I find it difficult to love the book as I should. I have little space for books, so thought it best to release it where it would be appreciated.

Swapped for some books I've been meaning to release for a while. Look forward to reading this.
I really enjoyed this story. It was only when I'd finished that I realised I have never read the original Wizard of Oz (what an oversight!). It's many years since I saw the film, so I'm thinking I might read the original Wizard to see how much Greg Maguire developed what was already there, and how much was completely new. The character of the witch was very sympathetic in this story - I was hoping throughout that her murder by Dorothy might turn out to be a hoax to fool the Emperor Wizard! And I understand there is a sequel - Son of a Witch, so that's something else to add to the TBR list!
Husband wants to read Wicked next, so I will "release" to him before one of us wild releases.

Gave to my mother, who is off to Australia, Japan and the UK. Not sure where the book will end up!
Update: Found it on a bookcase downstairs after my mother left. Guess it isn't travelling anywhere yet - a good thing, as Mr TheLetterB wants to read it now.

Sorry to have hung on to this book so long, I intended to email round and set up a book ray in NZ, but just never got around to it. Released with Son of a Witch into the very eager hands of FutureCat at today's meet up.

Snatched out of TheLetterB's arms when she arrived at the meetup this morning - Gregory Maguire is an author I've been wanting to read for ages!

Just as good as I expected it to be. But like TheLetterB, I'm going to have to seek out the original Oz books to compare them to Maguire's version. I'll definitely never look at the film in the same way again, anyway!
