FROM THE PUBLISHER
A young woman caught in the rivalry between Queen Mary and her half sister, Elizabeth, must find her true destiny amid treason, poisonous rivalries, loss of faith, and unrequited love.
It is winter, 1553. Pursued by the Inquisition, Hannah Green, a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl, is forced to flee Spain with her father. But Hannah is no ordinary refugee. Her gift of "Sight," the ability to foresee the future, is priceless in the troubled times of the Tudor court. Hannah is adopted by the glamorous Robert Dudley, the charismatic son of King Edward's protector, who brings her to court as a "holy fool" for Queen Mary and, ultimately, Queen Elizabeth. Hired as a fool but working as a spy; promised in wedlock but in love with her master; endangered by the laws against heresy, treason, and witchcraft, Hannah must choose between the safe life of a commoner and the dangerous intrigues of the royal family that are inextricably bound up in her own yearnings and desires.
Teeming with vibrant period detail and peopled by characters seamlessly woven into the sweeping tapestry of history, The Queen's Fool is another rich and emotionally resonant gem from this wonderful storyteller.

New book I got for MORSECODE...it's on her wish list! I hope you enjoy it. To my surprise this author has written ALOT of books! Hah, you learn something new every day!
PepperVL's wonderful wishlist book box arrived yesterday. AMarie put some fabulous books in it for me, including this one. Thanks so much, AMarie!
I've few a couple of Gregory's other books and so far this is one of my favorites (my favorite at the moment is still The Constant Princess, though because I just loved her descriptions of Moorish Spain).
I love the character of Hannah. I thought she was a multifaceted with an interesting story (though at times I got annoyed with her being wishywashy especially with her loyalty to both Mary and Elizabeth).
While I thought Gregory gave quite a bit of detail about court life at the time, it seemed like sometimes she glossed over some things (like she never said what happened to Mary's dead babies, I'm assuming that Mary eventually had to be induced to give birth to the stillborn children, but I don't remember Gregory saying anything about that) - though if I remember correctly that kind of thing is corrected in Gregory's later work.
I'm offering this book in a historical fiction relay.

Going to rannnie, who accepted it as part of a historical fiction relay.

This was an enjoyable book with good historical detail, an exciting plot, and interesting, well-developed characters. Hannah's loyalties were a bit difficult for me to understand - I'm not sure a Jewish woman in Tudor England could sympathize with Bloody Mary. Nevertheless, Hannah's position as outsider in the court brought a fresh perspective to the religious and political struggles of the time.
