Celebrated in pre-WWII France for her bestselling fiction, the Jewish Russian-born Némirovsky was shipped to Auschwitz in the summer of 1942, months after this long-lost masterwork was composed. Némirovsky, a convert to Catholicism, began a planned five-novel cycle as Nazi forces overran northern France in 1940. My mom (chargoyle) came to visit this weekend so I picked out some of my TBRs that I thought she'd enjoy to borrow.
This ARC book is from my daughter (morsecode).
It is an absolutely fascinating unadorned portrayal of the fall of France to the Natzi's from someone who was there at the time. Wow, what a stark study of human nature! I didn't even like most of the characters. Despite that, Nemirovsky pulled me in, and I kept reading to find out what happened to them. I'm sure that was the author's intent -- to demonstrate how normal, everyday people behave when caught up in terrible events beyond their control.

I got this book back from my mom (via my sister) today.
