A complex interweaving of a number of threads which come together satisfactorily in the end. One of the central characters, Brother Anselm, functions as a rather dense (human) but likeable detective: the other, Agnes, developes Motor neurone disease. This releases an urgent need to tell her story through her grandaughter. The opening chapters are a little unerving as the narrative moves from one thread to another and the reader is unsure of where it is all going. But it is worth persisting. This was a Richard & Judy Book Club choice in 2005.
