I seem to be alone on this one, which seems to have been enjoyed a lot more by other BCers. But that's what makes all this interesting, right?

To me, the mixture of saccharine sentimentality and explicit violence was unsettling... it would be a good our-loud story for kids, but would need a quick editorial eye in some places. And what's more, we have perhaps the first description in English literature of an elephant's orgasm.

This is supposedly a true story, but I suspect that especially the middle portion (which I enjoyed a lot... it occurs in India and is a little reminiscent of bits of the Life of Pi) is a highly romanticized and idealized recollection of events long past. Towards the end of the story, the author and the main character (Bram) meet up, so presumably the story is as told by Bram to the author, without any attempt to confirm any part of the story from other sources. So this is a novel, to my eyes, more than a piece of journalism.

If anyone has read this far and happens to have a thing for elephants, I'd recommend Gerald Durrell's "Rosy is my Relative" over "Modoc" any day. Of course, it has been 30 years since I read "Rosy", but in memory at least it is one of the funniest books I have ever read.
