One of the silliest books ever written and also one of the best. I always take a towel with me, thanks to this book.

I am not usually a big fan of reading books or novels. I am more like the guy who likes to read ESPN The Magazine, or the sports section in the newspaper. I came across this book because my teacher recommended it, and plus i wanted to see what this book-crossing thing was about. This is one of the few books that I would rather read than my sports ones. At first it's hard to understand what exactly is going on, but after the beginning, it's very easy to understand. One thing I like about this book is the humor and sarcasm. These are one of those books that you have to read twice to catch all the funny lines and phrases in it. The part in the beginning when Arthur's house is about to get bulldoze, and Ford comes and solves the whole dilema is a very funny part. Or the Vogon's poetry and how it is worse than killing someone. Douglas Adams does a great job of explaining what everyone is thinking, even going as far as describing a depressed robot named Marvin. I would definetly recommend this book for everyone in high school. The plot in this book is very unique. Who would have ever thought that the planet earth was a huge computer program that was ruled by super-intelligent mice just trying to answer the question about life and the universe? Another thing I like about this book is that it is very random. All of the sudden two guided missles turn into a sperm whale? Or, 1 second away from death in outer space, the Heart of Gold comes out of nowhere and rescues them, allowing the story to continue. Arthur Dent and Ford Perfect's journey is far from over and I hope to read the next part of this triology.
I plan on giving this to one of my classmates or to one of my friends who read the first chapter and loved it so much, I had to wrestle them to get it back.

I found this to be a very funny, easy to read science fiction book. In the beginning it was a little confusing, but after a couple chapters the reader is able bring it all together. This was an extremely funny book and i enjoyed reading it. I dont usually read science fiction novels of this kind, but i heard it to be a very good book. I liked in the beginning how the author related the destruction of Arthur Dent's house to the destruction of the Earth, both destroyed in order to put up an express-way. I thought the whole Vogon experience was a little confusing when i first read it but in later chapters it was required that the reader had a history of the Vogons and the experience that Arthur and Ford had while on the Vogon Ship. The more i read the more interested i got. When Trillian, Zaphod (the president of the Galaxy who stole the Heart of Gold, the ship based on improbability), Arthur Dent. and Ford Prefect reach the lost planet of Magrathea they find out that mice run the universe and that the Earth is a computer created in order to find the Question of the Universe, that suits the Answer (42!!). But the mice want to "buy" Arthur's brain, ("luckily...?), 2 creatures who are after Zaphod because of the ship he stole show up and begin to shoot at them. Fortunately their packs blow up, killing them, which allows Trillian, Zaphod,Arthur, and Ford to escape in their ship. I enjoyed the details given by the arthor in order to "paint" a picture in the reader's mind. These very detailed descriptions got the reader deeply involved, making them (at least me) to read more. I thought this book was VERY good. I would recommend it to everyone. i deeply enjoyed reading it and hope that others have the same opportunity. people are already very interested in this book, word is going around school of its comedy, teh book was taken out the same day that i returned it. I have to say, I'm not an avid reader, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After hearing so many good things about it i decided to read it and enter it as my first book on BookCrossing.com. A few of my classmates and even my teacher read this and gave it great reviews, and I'm going to do the same.
Initially, I was quite weary about reading this book on top of all my other homework, but after reading the first few pages, I WAS HOOKED! Not only was the book well written, it was tremendously funny, but in a silly way. Just the characters are enough to make you laugh. I mean, there is a chronically depressed ROBOT named Marvin. At the end of the story he ends up destroying a space ship just because he talks to it. Now if that's not crazy, I don't know what is! I have to say, the author, Douglas Adams, has a extraordinary imagination to create such a far-fetched and silly story like this one.
The plot of this story was GREAT! One of the best parts of the book(for me) was when Authur Dent and his crew are being chased around by two nuclear missiles shot off of an ancient hidden planet named Magraetha, and then, all of the sudden they turn into a sperm whale and a pot of flowers. Then, the story goes on to talk about the whale who is giving names to all of the new things he is encountering since he has just been spawned into existence. But then he sees something round coming towards him very fast. So he quickly makes a name for this. The whale says a few jumbled words and then comes up with "ground". The whales short existence ends here with a big "splat" on the "ground". You'd have to read it to get the full effect, but i found it really funny because it adds nothing to the story except humor.
I also really liked how the author made this story revolve around the most little, menacing creatures that humans have come to hate. I'm not going to tell you any more about this, or else I'll ruin the story. But you'll definitely get a kick out of it! So go ahead and read it for yourself. I assure you, you won't be disappointed. This book is a very easy read and is great for those who like to read just for fun. I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone! In fact, someone has already asked me for it when I'm done. This book is the first of a trilogy, so if you have the time, read them all! That's exactly what I'm going to do next.

This book was extremely hilarious and improbable . This was one of the funniest stories ive ever read and I want to read the rest of the Hitchikers series it was so good. Arthur Dnet is so clueless and Ford Prefect is extremely off the wall kind of guy.

This was an excellent book. I liked the new humerous perspective it portrayed the universe. I plan to continue reading the "trilogy". I recommended this book to one of my dad who enjoys these types of books also.

I loved this silly, sarcastic book. This is the first novel I've read by Douglas Adamas and I now plan to read the rest of his "Triligy".

Everything was so funny, I even had to laugh out loud at some points, a robot who causes a ship to commit suicide, Volgan death poetry, and the president of the galaxy turning off part of his brain so he doesnt betray himself...its a modern classic
