First in the popular Harry Potter series.

After reading this book, I understand why this series is so popular. The writing and characterization drew me right in, and even if the characters are rather exaggerated they still come across as alive and very human.

Harry Potter is orphaned as a baby when an evil sorcerer kills his parents, so he is sent to live with an aunt and uncle who despise magic and spoil their own son while treating Harry like dirt. When Harry receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, his step-parents try to prevent him from getting it, but to no avail when Hagrid the friendly giant intervenes. With his parents' legacy Harry is able to equip himself for his unusual education. However, once he gets to Hogwarts, he discovers dangers and enemies far more fearful than a stuck-up aunt and uncle and a bratty cousin--

Although this is technically a children's book, adults will find it appealing. I galloped through this tale, and can't wait to gulp down the second volume in the series!
