Thank you Isisjem! Looks like a great read. According to the back cover it's the story of Helene Hanff's love affair with her own home town, New York City, which when she was asked to write a series of articles about it realised she didn't really know it, and set off with a friend to explore.
I really enjoyed 84 Charing Cross Road, so am looking forward to reading this.

In her outstandingly successful 84 Charing Cross Road Helene Hanff told the story of her 20-year relationship with an antiquarian bookshop in London.
In this book she celebrates something even bigger - her lifelong love for New York. Asked to write some text to accompany a picture-book about "The Big Apple", she found to her dismay that she knew hardly anything about her own city, and so she asked a friend to go exploring with her. This is the story of that two-month madcap voyage of discovery.
It is one of the best travel books I have ever read - a unique, humourous account of the author's at times frenetic trips around New York city to learn all those things we never seem to know about our own home towms: the best places to eat, to see, its history, how to get around it best, its art galleries, museums, most scenic spots and so on.
A must read for everyone, with the chapter on her visit to the World Trade Centre (both Helene Hanff and her friend are scared of heights) particularly poignant in light of 9/11. (The book was first published in 1977.)
