Winnie would say she's no trouble. She's content to let the days go by, minding her own business, bothering no-one. She'd rather not recall the past and, at 72, doesn't see much point in thinking about the future. But when her closed existence is shattered by a random act of violence, Winnie is catapulted out of her exile. Robbed of everything she owns, she embarks on a journey to track down the thief - but she soon finds that what began as a search for stolen belongings has become the rediscovery of a stolen life.

I can't think why I let this book languish, so long on my bookshelf, it's a wonderful read.
Sad and funny and engaging. I loved Winnie/Lillian/Patsy and felt enraged by the injustices she suffered.
I've discovered a new author!
Recommended unreservedly.

Umm. I'm in two minds about this book. I enjoyed it and it is certainly well written but the story unfolded quite slowly and I didn't particularly like any of the characters, with the exception of "Winnie". I found it hard to determine whether she was mad/simple or just different enough for people to think her so. I'm a bit perplexed by it. No doubt as I think it over this book will creep up to become quite emotional.

Thank you Redhouse for sharing this. I've PM'd KT-J for her address.

I loved this book, I thought it was really well written the way it built up Winnie's memories interspersed with the present to the final chapter where you finally understand what happened in her life.

It was a truly sad book with all the things that happened and where she ended up, but I really enjoyed reading it.

Thanks again for letting me read this.

This arrived in the mail today, but it was a surprise, honest! **laughs** I'm glad I'm the last in the ring, because it will take me a while to get to it. Don't worry, lellie, you'll get it back! In the meantime, I thank you in advance for your patience **smiles** Thank you for sharing!

This book was a surprise. Yes, it was slow-moving, but I think that served the story well. It wasn't a tale to be told in a rush. I had a really hard time explaining it to people when folks asked what I was reading these days, though! **lol** At first I worried that I'd read this book and be noncommittal about it by the end. "Eh, I read it, I passed it on..." But that wasn't the case! By the end, I pulled an all-nighter to finish it! I think I will spend a lot of time reflecting on this book, even after I've passed it on... reflecting on the invisibility of the elderly (especially women) and the matter-of-fact atrocities the main character lived through... I can't help but think this would be the kind of book my Women's Studies instructor ought to read. I could totally see her assigning it as required reading to write an essay about by the end of the course, tying in parallels between course material and the subjects touched upon in the story. In fact, I may end up buying a copy of this to give to her, just in case the thought strikes her, too.

lellie, thanks so much for sharing this book! I am very very pleased that I got the chance to read it. As per our PM discussion, I have a friend in the UK who is wishing for this book, and so it is reserved for her now that the ray is over. Thanks again!

August 12/08 -- I hope that my friend likes it! So sorry it's late!
