In the first of these two chapters from his recent book The Origin of Humankind, the famous paleo-anthropologist Richard Leakey discusses one of the hottest issues in anthropolgy: where did modern humans first appear - Africa, Europe, the Middle East or Asia. In the next chapter he looks at the capacity for artistic expression and describes his awe at contemplating some of the most potent relics of human prehistory - the ancient cave paintings of France and Spain.
