"The protagonist of Siri Hustvedt's astonishing second novel is a heroine of the old style: tough, beautiful, and brave. Standing at the threshold of adulthood, she enters a new world of erotic adventure, profound but unexpected friendship, and inexplicable, frightening acts of madness. Lily's story is also the story of a small town--Webster, Minnesota--where people are brought together by a powerful sense of place, both geographical and spiritual. Here gossip, secrets, and storytelling are as essential to the bond among its people as the borders that enclose the town.
The real secret at the heart of the book is the one that lies between reality and appearances, between waking life and dreams, at the place where imagination draws on its transforming powers in the face of death." (Amazon)
I liked the book from the first page. Some reviews I've read complains about the story falling short at times - but I don't agree. The story is really good, the characters are interesting and the town of Webster reminds me a bit about my own home town. Everybody knows everybody - or at least they think they do - until someone does something unexpected. In a small town you can't escape your history - like the Bodler brothers who are branded for life because their mother was found buried in their garden.
Hustvedt's language is brilliant and she builds up to the ending very well. I'll read more of her books!

Thank you very much! I don´t know if you are into soccer? Because tomorrow is the big match!!
Sorry for the long delay. I finally managed to read the book- or truly spoken I didn´t.
Even though I quite like Hustvedt´s writing i couldn´t manage to read this book and leave it available for someone who appreciates it more.
