True History of the Kelly Gang
1 journaler for this copy...

The title pretty much tells the basis of the book: it is a fictionalized account of the life of Ned Kelly and his gang of bushrangers, who tore through the Australian outback in the late 1800s. This novel has won the Booker Prize so it's quite likely to be pretty good.

Forgot to rate this prior to making release notes. It was OK, but I found the dialect not so much hard to understand as distracting. The story itself is compelling--all the more so for being based on the life of a real person. Carey does a great job of illustrating the hardship and deprivation of life in developing Australia, and Kelly is a surprisingly sympathetic narrator. I know he is a folk *hero*, but I'd always had a notion of him being savage and vicious. He may well have been in real life, but Carey's portrayal of him kind of makes you see why he might have turned out that way.

I forgot what all I had to do last night and thus didn't have the chance to release this at Murphy's last night as intended. I will be releasing this book today somewhere around the UW. My sincere apologies to any fellow Bookcrossers who may have gone in search of it at Murphy's Pub.

Journal Entry 5 by heysquid at -- Wild Released Somewhere In Seattle in Seattle, Washington USA on Wednesday, February 12, 2003
Released on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at To be determined when I get there in Seattle, Washington USA.
probably going to be somewhere in the vicinity of the U District but not entirely sure. I had planned to release this last night then went back in to make a journal entry that I couldn't release it, which apparently cancelled out the "in the wild" status. Anyway, it's being released today. ARgh!
