This is an outdated edition of a book that seems not to have been updated after 1989 anyway. It's of interest because it shows that art history has changed much since this book was written; the scholarship has grown from its roots in the usual white-male preserve.

For instance, isn't it interesting that there are barely 2 female artists given entries in the book (which poses as comprehensive), while both the cover and the frontispiece feature female nudes. People sometimes don't realize that they are letting others define their worlds for them, in a manner as subtle as this, if they remain unaware of the construction of that definition. This edition is definitely a product of its day.

Still, for someone who would like a quick snapshot of a selection of art from this period, somewhere to start, the book might be of some use. Let the reader be a critical one, as all readers ought.

As a former art historian, I think art history is really useful for learning the visual code that is still in use today, so we can be critical observers and not fall prey to advertising and propaganda that tries to control the way we think!
