Not knowing what to expect, it took a little while to get into the story. I loved the character "Kwan" and the voice that the reader chose to give her.

It is a wonderful book that narrates the depth of Chinese supertition and culture in a seemless fashion. It is readily understandable to a chinese who lost the "understanding" or reasons to some supertition, and also helps someone outside of the culture to learn and understand more of the Chinese belief and practices.

Received the cassettes today. Yea!! Thanks so much for the RABCK, Smurphie. You are so kind. I also love the postcard. A nice blast from the past. ;-) I'm looking forward to listening to these. It will be my first experience with something written by Amy Tan. I should be able to get to this fairly shortly. Give my best to Scotland - home of my ancestors.
I enjoyed this story very much. I especially liked the character, Kwan, who was raised in a small village in China. The stories she tells of the old days and the "yin people" are fantastic. Her positive attitude is so enduring as well. It was entertaining how Kwan would vex her American half-sister, "Libby-ah", with her Chinese tales, superstitions and meddling... all with good reason as we learn later on. Amy Tan does a wonderful job telling this tale of two sisters, brought up an ocean apart, and how Olivia finally becomes to understand and accept Kwan's undying devotion to her. Thanks again, Smurphie, for sending me this audio. I will be passing this along when the opportunity arises.
