With the debate of Regan Reilly, it's time for V.I. Warshawski and other female detectives to make room for a new private investigator who has more pizzazz than muscle, as well as a sassy wit and a taste for stylish suspense. In Decked, Regan is setting sail on a transatlantic luxury liner in a fresh, urbane, and thoroughly entertaining mystery with all the classic elements of a firt-class who-dunit: an eccentric cast of suspects, a number of red herrings, a brisk plot, and of course a corpse.
Regan is back in Oxford for the reunion of her Junior Year Abroad at St. Polycarp's, and even faulty plumbing, lumpy beds, and dreary British weather cant' damper her delight. To her surprise, tea with the flamboyant 80-year-old Lady Exner in nearby Llewellyn Hall is also part of the fun. That is, until a dead body turns up under the bushes. It seems that Regan's old roommate Athena Popolous is still in Oxford - where she has been gently decomposing for years.
The local police are on the case, but Regan isn't! Dearly as she wants to stick around and snoop, she has already agreed to be a paid companion to the tippling, accident-prone Lady Exner aboard the posh cruise ship, the Queen Guinevere. Regan shouldn't have worried. The clues to the crime have followed them. As the ship leaves Southampton, the passenger list will include a jewel thief, an assassin, a fortune-hunter, and Regan's own parents, successful mystery writer Nora Regan Reilly and her sophisticated husband, Luke, who, with his string of funeral parlors, is also no stranger to death.
Obviously, Regan has inherited her mother's penchant for detection, but it will take more genes to help her find the murderer stalking the decks of the Queen Guinevere. Now, as she tries to keep octogenarian Lady Exner from self-destructing on champagne and late-night dancing, Regan needs to figure out the perilous connection between a decade-old-homicide and a killer with a brand-new motive for murder. If she doesn't, Regan Reilly may be entering some deep and dangerously troubled waters...in the dark regions of a murderer's heart.
