I received this as a trade from Cyber-Librarian. Anchient Egypt is another passion of mine. I'm thrilled to get a chance to read this book about "His Majesty Herself." Hatchepsut (or "Hats and Shoes" as she was called in a very funny 19th century mystery) was quite a historical figure and character.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and read it at one sitting! It's quite a page turner. I found some of the authors conclusions to be rather quick given the spotty historical record of that time period but there is pleanty of citations and a lengthy bibliography for further reading. :)
Now I know that there are others interested in this book so I am reserving this book to use as a ray.

Looks like a neat book, I love world history, and have been interested in learning more about Hatchepsut for a while.
I'm very close to being finished. This is an interesting book although I've found myself skimming a lot. The writing style is light and with a sense of humor which is rare in this kind of history text. You've got to love the idea of a woman declaring herself King and making up a fictitious history of her birth being a great celebration.
The book arrived safely today. I look forward to reading it! The Egyptian exhibits in the NYC museums are some of my favorites, and good ancient-history-based fiction or (light-reading nonfiction!) is hard to find.
This is a fascinating story. Unfortunately some ancient Egyptian dynasties had the nasty habits of "erasing" unpopular rulers' records after their deaths, so we don't know the exact circumstances of how she came to power, whether as a benevolent aunt helping out until her nephew came of age and doing the best that she could, or as a mean-spirited power-hungry woman who perhaps even had other rivals eliminated to secure her position. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. I hope the archaeologists are able to find more records to help solve some of the mysteries, eventually.
Thanks to caligula03 for starting this bookray!

Received in the mail today form Dr.Noelle. Thanks! I'm looking forward to reading it.
Fascinating book. I especially liked all the illustrations and photographs.

Just received! Will journal again when I've finished and pass along to the next person! :)
I have to admit that I didn't get all the way through this one, unfortunately the time of year, and life stress at the moment wasn't allowing me to give it the attention it deserved, and I didn't want to hold it up any longer!
thank you for sharing this one with us caligula03! Will be sending along to kaija this week.

Came in the mail yesterday.. I'll read it and get it out as fast as I can!
Sorry this took so long to read! I've had alot going on lately.
I found the book to be interesting, and it reminds me of a show I watched about Nefertiri a few years ago.. In that case not only did they portray her as a king, but her husband/consort as a queen.. (dressed as female).. The similarities were astounding. History is hard to prove, and I found it refreshing that this author was able to see that. See things as they may have been regardless of what the majority of historians say.
Good book for what it was.. it would have been nice if more was put into it.. , but.. there really wasn't anything to back up more arguments I suppose.
Now on to the next!

YIKES! I have become one of those fellow bookcrossers who takes forever to journal a book sent in a ring or ray! It arrived while I was on
vacation, and was put on my TBR shelves, where I just found it!
I apologize to everyone on the list, especially to caligula03, for starting this ray in the first place, and to kaija, who sent it on to me!
Will read directly and send on it's way to MaryZee!

FINALLY sending this off to MaryZee in Maryland, who is next on the list for this book ring!
Came today in the mail, with a few surprises. What a lovely mailing envelope! Will read this one as soon as I finish my current read.
8/20/05 - Just starting on this today.

Almost finished with this. I don't know why I assumed this was fiction (thought perhaps along the lines of Pope Joan, which I loved). So I was a bit disappointed it wasn't historical fiction. I guess I assumed we know so little of Hatshepsut's life, that it must be fictional. That said, I still found it an interesting read. I've read 2/3 of Pauline Gedge's Lord of Two Lands trilogy, which deals with the end of the 17th Dynasty. It was interesting to read in the pre-history of Hatchepsut about the characters in Gedge's books and get some of the factual history of them.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and learned a lot of interesting info, although it's taken me a while to read this book. I suppose I've been a bit distracted lately - moved my daughter and only child 6+ hours away to college over the weekend. But I'll be finished with this book today or tomorrow. I've been trying to reach Jamieh2003 (without any luck so far) - now I'll also pm Czersk, so I can move this book on soon.
Thanks for sharing, Caligula03!
9/3/05 update - Sent this off to Czersk today. No luck reaching Jamieh2003.

It's here! It seems like I signed up for this book an eternity ago, and I almost lost faith in this ring, but it perservered. Thanks everyone for the book.
I think a part of being a good Bookcrosser is knowing when you are beat. I know that I won't have time for this book, and even if I did, I'm in a state of mental overload right now and a nonfiction biography on a female pharoah is the last thing I need. I need fluff; Hatchepsut is anything but fluff. So, I regret that I must pass this book on. Thanks for the opportunity everyone, although I did not take it.
Off to the next.
Off to the next.
Arrived here in CA safe and sound. I will provide an update within a month as to status on this book.
Update: November 4th: I had some personal events which took away virtually all reading time the past month. I will be starting this book in approximately 3 days, and then will pass on. My apologies for the delay.

I'm not going to rate this book, as I only got through about 60 pages or so. I think it's partly the book, but also partly me. I've had a number of things taking my attention from this, and it just doesn't engage me enough to keep going.
I do have the next participant's address, but with the holidays, I am not sure when I can mail it. It's going international (to Canada), so I'll need to go inside the post office. It might have to hang out until after Christmas, as my job demands are pretty extreme the next few weeks, and don't allow me to take an hour lunch standing in line. I will do what I can. Thank you in advance for understanding. I will post a release note when I get it mailed.
