Received for Christmas (was on my wishlist). About half way through and enjoying very much. Can easily pick up where you left off and get engrossed.

Zafon's writing style has me interested in the characters and captured by the story within the first few pages. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing but not so complicated that you can't drop out and back in again at ease. From the Observer: "Everything about TSOTW is smooth. The language purrs along, while the plot twists and unravels with a languid grace... Zafon's novel is atmospheric, beguiling and thoroughly readable".

This sat on Mount TBR for a while but I finally got around to read it and loved it! The setting, of post-war Barcelona, is brilliant, and the story and characters rich and intriguing. The writing is great as it flows well and there is a lovely euphony to his choice of words; I assume it was written originally in Spanish so credit is partly due to the translator. The Shadow of the Wind reads like a fantasy novel, but it's actually straight fiction.

A fantastic read! I really enjoyed this novel. It was a well-paced engaging story with likeable and charismatic heroes and malevolent villians. I was sad to finish this wonderful book. I'll definitely be gifting this one to my friends and family this year.

Thanks for sharing Fire-dragon and KBHR!
