Clive James said of the character Rumpole, "Thank Heaven for small mercies, The first of these is Rumpole".
Many people have met Rumpole through the television series 'Rumpole of the Bailey', in which Leo McKern so admirably portrayed the character. You must, however, read the John Mortimer 'Rumpole' books (12 in all,I think) to appreciate fully the comic creation, superb literary style and the faultless knowledge of the intricacies and absurdities of the British legal system. If you enjoy reading this one, I urge you to get your hands on the other 11. They're brilliant !
