Not sure if I have read this before or not, so when I saw it for $1 in lifeline I had to pick it up :)
Gratefully received, to be released at the convention in October.
Thanks from the convention committee.

Found in my goodie bag at the Melbourne 2007 BookCrossing Convention. I've enjoyed other books by Hoffman so am looking forward to reading this too.
I've enjoyed other books by Alice Hoffman - she has a great kind of magic realism way of describing landscapes, memories and awkwardnesses between people. However, this was just flawed.
The Heathcliff-like figure of Hollis is so dark and tormented he seemed a caricature, like Jilly Cooper's all-powerful malevolent conductor Rannaldini. What I just didn't get was the way March fell under his spell so easily. She's initially presented as a capable, thoughtful wife and mother and businesswoman, and to see her suddenly consenting to all these restrictions and ignoring her daughter is painful.
The ending is just too convenient - that amount of gloom and darkness doesn't just suddenly disappear with one death. I read the book with relish, but I just wanted it to be slightly more psychologically reasonable - is that too much to ask? Frustrating.
