The Back of the Book
It is Charlotte's first night in boarding school. But when she wakes up, the girl in the next bed is not the person who was sleeping there the evening before. And the new building outside her window seems to have metamorphosed into a huge, dark cedar tree!
Somehow, Charlotte has slipped back forty years.
Happy Birthday RABCK!

Got it yesterday. Sorry for delay, but couldn't get a connection for much of last night! I only knew of the existence of this book becuase of the song by The Cure..may well be dating myself here!
Read about 50 pages of this and couldn't get into it. A similar premise to Tom's Midnight Garden which I love. I'm pming Wilksie for an address.

This was just the sort of children’s book I would have enjoyed when I was 10, boarding school life, time travel, history. But I was surprised to find that it was published in 1969 as it is written in a terribly slow paced old-fashioned manner. It did get better as it went on and I quite liked it (great idea) but kept having the feeling that it could have been so much more. Charlotte was a very bland heroine. If only Emily had been the principal character! Apart from mentioning aeroplanes, very little was made of the differences between life in 1918 and life in the sixties. I do wish we had found out how Clare coped with being flung into the future (an era of pop music, mini skirts, space travel). I cannot imagine how she would have fitted in. The ending was touching and the basic idea was good but unfortunately the rest of the book felt as if it hadn’t been properly thought through.
Sending on to 4orty7even as soon as I get an address.

Arrived safely yesterday - thanks wilksie, and thanks also for the chocolate buttons, my daughter was thrilled and enjoyed sharing them (grudgingly) with her brother ! Will journal again after she's read it. I think it's next on her list.
