This is the second in the Famous Five series, but like most of the Famous Five books can be read independently of the others as the previous adventures are only mentioned and not described.
The usual stereotypes, but I did find George's father much more irritating on this re-read. It's bad enough that the family revolves around him and his work, but the stereotype of a clever scientist is more than irksome.
