This novel is so painfully well-observed that I couldn't bear to finish it. McGregor has the skill of using simple language and honest emotions to find the humanity and uniqueness in the most mundane of situations and it's not long before his unnamed characters seem so real that you care unreasonable about their fate. At the same time, the air of foreboding that hangs over the entire narrative makes you fear the worst for them. Really, it's a 275-page poem and not a novel at all.
