I did read this a long time ago. I was intrigued by the name. I don't remember when the news about the real planet Nemesis came out, but I've always been mildly interested in astronomy.

I received this from Erishkigal in the US, who is very kindly helping us restart this ring. Thank you very much. Thanks too for the "Asimovs Science Fiction" short stories. I have heard a lot about these before, but this is the first I have had the privilege to read.

Adding to my bookshelf as it is replacing the ring that was lost.

This was an engaging read, and follows a theme explored in at least one of Asimov's other books. I liked the way he describes the characters, and the presentation of Marlene's ability to "read" everyone else's thoughts and motives, merely by observing their body language is itself a stroke of genius. This ability could almost be described as a super-power akin to telepathy, but Asimov beds it's roots firmly in the realms of possibility, with no "hocus-pocus" involved. It is attributed to Marlene's intelligence, observational abilities, and understanding of human motives, but it spooks the other characters in this tale.

I haven't given anything away, as there is more to this book than Marlene's abilities. Much of the story rotates around the political manouvering of the main players. The scifi elements are revealed bit by bit as the story progresses. Having just read the first two books in Ken Macleod's Engines of Light series, I was struck by certain common elements, and I feel I can detect a strong Asimov influence on them.

Overall I enjoyed this book, though I maintain the impression that Asimov was better at conveying ideas and concepts, than he was at building believable and different characters. He did try to make them different, but they were a little bit two dimensional. A worthwhile read none the less.

This copy supplied by Eriskigal is restarting the ring started by abrokenstarr.
