This book certainly gave me insight into a whole different world.

I now believe I "don't get art" and definitely don't get the whole moral insanity thing.

There was something about the writing in this book, like it was difficult, like the characters (despite the near obnoxious detail level) were never really human or known to you.

I don't think it was on behalf of the author but I guess on my part, it was hard to understand these people, their lives, what drives them because they were so different from me. And while that usually makes a story more interesting for me, it really didn't this time. Just made it seem like work to finish the book (a silly trait of my own, have to finish what I start).

At least the second half sort of gave it a purpose or point *I* could understand, a wee bit of a mystery/thriller vibe but not even enough of one that I could call it a pleasure read instead of an enlightening read.

I think for someone a little more into her style, you might agree with the positive reviews on say Amazon but I guess I am more simple and would tend to agree with the reviews like "what the heck was that".

I think this might be a nice experiment for my very first bookring. Maybe by sharing with others and reading the journal entries I'll gain better insight to what I missed. Maybe there is a huge group of her fans out there that "get her" :)

First - I forgot to thank queensknob and forevertiny for the kind gifts!! Yeah!!!

Second - this book took me longer than I would have expected to read it. Because it is engaging, and I had trouble putting it down, and often felt I had read many more pages than I actually had. It is dense. I can see it being a good book for an English class, because the symbolism is rampant. EVERYWHERE. I particularly like the Mr. Ree and Miss. Tery versions of mystery. Intriguing. This was a fascinating read, and I highly recommend it. Very enjoyable, even if it took me longer than I would have liked :-)

I have arugh48187's address and will be mailing this off ASAP

Found this one in my mailbox today. I have a few bookrings in front of it, but it shouldn't take too long. You can keep track of its progress via my bookshelf.

Well, when I started this book, I thought I was going to love love love it. But alas! It disappointed. I usually am fascinated by books about art and artists, but this one just didn't flip my lid. There was too much detail about Bill's work; way too much detail. It is news to me that there is symbolism rampant in this book, because I totally missed it. I might have seen a bit in Bill's work, but otherwise I was clueless.

This book was quite character driven; a little bit too much so. As such, I wish I could say that the Violet and Bill and Erica and Leo were enthralling, but I can't. They were just mediocre; likable, but not rivetting. The mystery bit was somewhat more interesting, but I didn't like Mark at all and didn't care what happened to him. So, I guess I will have to agree with jdp and go with the "eh" rating: good, but nothing to rave about.

This book will go out as soon as I get an address. Sorry for keeping it so long.
