The Literary Review said...

"Born in sweaty, fetid eighteenth-century Paris, Grenouille is distinctive even in infancy. He has 'the finest nose in Paris and no personal odor'. With wit, a Gothic imagination and considerable originality, Suskind has developed this simple idea into a fantastic tale of murder and twisted eroticism controlled by a disgusted loathing of humanity...Clever, stylish, absorbing and well worth reading."

The murders are all rather odd, but then of course they would be as they are so enveloped in the murderer's sense of smell. I didn't really find much of it believable (the cave?!) but I think I enjoyed it overall, and it definitely made me pay more attention to the smells individual objects can have.

I had read this book many years ago... It was nice to read it again! It's a great story, strange but great! The description of the smells, the perfumes, the feelings (or the luck of feelings!) is a masterpiece! And Grenouille is a unique "hero"!

Oops, forgot to journal this when I first got it!
An enjoyable read - strange concept which kept me reading, and a nicely judged ending.

Ready to be passed on.

Hmmm, enjoyed the concept, and the writing is impressive, but something about it failed to rouse my interest and I didn't finish it - I hope to pass it on to someone more appreciative tomorrow.

I took this book from the Manchester meet with the idea in mind to let it travel some more by placing it in a bookbox! So, here it goes into the Fiction Mix box traveling again on 31st August 2006

The cover (not the one shown!) made me take note of this book, so I took it from the box. I will read and pass on.

This was a strange read, but after a slow start I really enjoyed it. I think this has to be the surprisingly good read of 2006 for me.

It is amazing how much more I have become aware of my sense of smell while reading this book.

This is earmarked for the next reader and so will pass on soon.

Journal Entry 14 by KaKo27 from Sarisbury Green, Hampshire United Kingdom on Monday, September 3, 2007
I took the book out of the box "Never judge a book box" and somehow forgot to register it. The sentence on the wrapping appealt to me, so I was a bit sorry, that I had already read the book some years ago in German. On the other hand, if I had not known the book, the sentence was spot on for a very good read.

As I said in the last journal entry, I read the book some years ago, and I will never forget how much it impressed me, the atmosphere the author created and the lovely shudder, whilst reading about Grenouille and the virgin girls.
It was one of the rare books you carry around in your mind for a long time after having finished it.

I picked this up at the last London meetup and finished it on the tube this morning. What an interesting story! The writing was fantastic, and it's definitely made me think more about the scents of the world.

Will be looking for a new home for this well-travelled book soon.
