Angela's Ashes

I was going to give up on this book a few times. The first was when I started it. It was hard to get into the writing style until I figured out that he didn't put his dialogues in quotes. The 2nd was about 1/2 way through because every time you think they had hope, the dad would spend their money to get drunk and it just seemed repetitive and annoying. I did start reading another story but ended up going back because I wanted to know what happened to Frank and his brothers.
There were a few funny moments. Not great enough but I did end up buying 'Tis, one of his other books, and A Monk Swimming, one of his brother's books, although I haven't read either one.

Unbelievable that this man is still alive let alone a success. The horrible poverty, hunger, filth, disease, alcoholism, and the lack of adults who are willing to do whatever it takes (like a job) to support the family; surely you would think he has no odds of making it. Yet, he doesn't come across as bitter or even unloving to those who placed him in this situation. His life is an inspiration.
Better him than me...
