THis book contains exactly the same themes as "Midwives", Bohjalian's best seller that I really disliked. Esentially, a bad thing occurs and the personal and family trajedy gets upstaged as the event is usurped by various larger interest groups. The characters are cartoons. I really didn't think the author made it clear how the families involved made their emotional journeys through these difficult roadblocks, but they all seemed to live happily (and meat free) ever after.
