I like Bernard Malamud. But as near as I can tell, all of his books and stories are about aging, impoverished Jewish shopkeepers and their sickly wives, and occasionally their woefully "Americanized" children. This book does little to refute my opinion.
It was a decent read, though. The ending left me confused - a lot of things up in the air. You have no idea which way these peoples lives will go in. Malamud does a great job with dialogue, though. And the characters are very real, very human - actually, it's almost excessive how much of the book is spent on what they're thinking and feeling. This could have been more subtle.
This is an old paperback in readable, but not great shape.
