I picked up this copy at the Library's book sale cart. I read the book months ago, and just did not enjoy it as much as Secret Life of Bees. The characters were interesting, but I found Jessie's affair with the Monk rather unlikely. Kidd did such great work with Secret Life; it was hard not to find this a bit disappointing.

Well, I would guess that most people find this one not as good as Secret Life of Bees. I don't think it will resonate with such a broad audience.

having said that, I quite enjoyed it. I found the question of martyrdom quite interesting, but perhaps that's because I work at a convent! It's more about finding yourself and being true to who you really are than to a label.

The Sisters here [at work, who have a copy too] don't like it so much - maybe the monk-love part?

sent off this AM to oldreader - delivery conf. is 0305 2200 0000 0980 4221. Hope you like it.

ladilee, thanks for the ring!

I found this one a bit hard to get into but it was pretty good after I finally got interested. I couldn't seem to empathize with the characters though.

Journal Entry 11 by tiatia from Fredericksburg, Virginia USA on Tuesday, April 4, 2006
Arrived with three other ring/ray selections. Good thing I read fairly quickly. I'll try not to hold it up for the last person on the list. Thanks for sharing it.

Journal Entry 12 by tiatia from Fredericksburg, Virginia USA on Monday, April 10, 2006
Resonated with me on a strictly personal basis. My scenario is two people who are so compatible and have feelings for each other (dare I say love), but one is married and committed to a spouse and the other is committed to the happiness of the married person at the sacrifice of personal happiness. Bet you can see why I loved the book and cried through various parts.
The finger slicing was an odd twist and I don't relate to people with that dogmatic an outlook. Nelle's deed was horrific but that's why we have so many arguements about the pros and cons of self determination.
Thank you ladilee24 for sharing. It was soooo much better than I anticipated. Off to barbieq233 as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 19 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Friday, July 28, 2006
I got into this book a lot more than the other book I read by this author The Secret Life of Bees. I didn't agree with everything Jessie did in regards to her husband and her affair, but I could relate to her feelings. This quote in particular resonated in regards to how Jessie felt about her life-
"Everything shrunk down to the roles I played. I had loved doing them, I really had, but they were drying up, and they weren't really me."

I was very caught up in Jessie's life. At the same time, I felt sorrier for her husband and the situation he was in because of Jessie's "issues."

I enjoyed the way this book was written with Jessie telling her part of the tale in first person and the others' parts told in third person.

I am sending this on to DoveiLibri today.
